In addition, tolerance occurs with all H2RAs. When acid is suppressed, histamine receptors on parietal cells are up-regulated. As the dose of the H2RA is increased, the receptors continue to be up-regulated and tolerance develops. When patients have unrelieved symptoms, there are increased costs of care beyond drug therapy.
